A WORLD OF CULTURES

We are learning all about the different cultures in Team 15&16.

Josh, Nicolas, Lucas, Gan and their families taught us about China.
The boys sang 'Twinkle, twinkle, little star' in Mandarin.  They read us a poem in Mandarin.  Lucas explained about the famous Terracotta Warriors.

Josh's mum told us about the Moon Festival and read us a story in Mandarin.

Nicolas's Mum told us about Lucky Money envelopes.  On special occasions and celebrations people are given money in the red envelopes.  The writing on the envelopes are wishing you good luck, health, wealth and happiness.

Josh's mum taught us how to make Chinese Lanterns
Here we are making our lanterns...

Here are our beautiful Chinese Lanterns...

Nicolas's mum made us fried noodles, Gan's Grandad made us spring rolls and Lucas's Grandad made us dumplings.  THEY WERE ALL DELICIOUS!  We used chopsticks to eat - we are pretty good at using chopsticks.  We have lots of experts in our class!

Here are some of our children in their national costume ...
Shaquil ... Sri Lanka

Nicolas and Josh ... China

Jaslyn ... Nuie

Eun-Hae's mum is from South Korea.  She visited us again to talk about her culture ...

Eun-Hae and Mrs Monk dressed up in traditional Korean costumes

We tried Korean treats ...
Seaweed crisps

Korean rice snacks
Peppero sticks - these are eaten on 11/11 each year to wish for tall,  healthy children
We practised paper folding.

We blew up folded paper balls

We made love hearts

The Japanese drummers came to school ... it was loud and fast and exciting ...

Taneesha's Mum is from India.  She came to school today to talk about her culture.

She made us potato fritters and onion bhajis.  They were delicious!
We said a prayer before we ate our food.  That is an Indian tradition.  Other cultures pray before eating too.
Namaste is hello

Taneesha's mother drew designs on our hands with henna.  This is part of the Indian culture for celebrations...

We tried some Indian dancing...

Gan, Nicolas and JoshZ come from China.

In China they speak Mandarin.  Gan, Nicolas and JoshZ taught us how to count to 10 in Mandarin.

Jacqui works at CSNS.  She is from China.  She read us a book in Mandarin and then in English.  It was frustrating not to understand the book.  That must be what it is like for CSKids like Gan who could not speak English when he came to school.
Gan and Nicolas and JoshZ understood Jacqui and they could answer all her questions.  We couldn't!!!  They really enjoyed the story.  It was fun listening to them talking in Mandarin.

Eun-Hae's Father comes from Japan

Japanese flag
Eun-Hae wore a Ukata which is a traditional Japanese summer dress.  In the winter she wears a Kimono.
The Ukata is lighter and brighter than a Kimono.
Eun-Hae's Mum made us sushi.  We had chicken sushi and salmon sushi.  IT WAS DELICIOUS!
First the Nori ...
Then the rice ...

A sprinkle of sesame seeds ...

...some chicken ..

...roll it up nice and tight ...

Chicken and avocado sushi

Salmon and cucumber sushi

Eun-Hae gives us all some sushi.

Delicious with some soya sauce!

Some yummy rice crackers!

We learned to count to 10 in Japanese.  These are Japanese words for 1,2,3 and Chinese numbers, which they use in Japan too.

India

Akshat, Taneesha and Simran are Indian.

We have learnt about Diwali.  It is a celebration in India for the New Year.
Diwali is called the Festival of Lights.
We made candles to light for Diwali.
